A crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city’s history, and centered on a the lives of an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built.
Need time to digest it, but J.C. Chandor is an incredibly talented director. His directing here is on point and very astute. The film is very leisurely paced, in no rush to get anywhere and as a result it really milks every scene for all its worth. It’s sort of haunting too, it creeps up on you as you become more invested in what’s going on. I liked Margin Call fine and I think All Is Lost is a masterpiece, and while this may not be quite that, it’s still sort of rather very good and square in the middle of his filmography in terms of quality.
Oscar Isaac has a very subdued role, no shock he didn’t get any traction, but he does a lot with it. In an incredibly strong year for Lead Actor, he may make my top 10, but that’s about it. Chastain is about the same. I expected a much showier role, but it’s actually not. It’s not a loud performance either, and I can actually see her being snubbed for an Oscar nomination. I think she’s simply wonderful though.
